Fileservers provide a number of methods of provisioning storage, which allows for the highest levels of utilization. However, every time a fileserver provides a new method for provisioning it also provides a new interface to understand how much storage is currently provisioned and how much remains available. The fact that many of these methods are layered, with provisioned storage from one method becoming available to the next method, means that something that seems as simple as knowing how much storage is allocated can become a significant task. Storage administrators need details of past and current storage provisioning and utilization so that they can understand future storage provisioning needs. Storage administrators also need details of other resources within each fileserver, such as operations per second and CPU utilization, to ensure that they are aware of potential bottlenecks and can take action to avoid them.

WysDM for Fileservers provides full reporting and analysis on capacity planning. It monitors all significant resources, from CPU utilization to disk activity, and provides reporting on past and present usage as well as trends and predicted usage. Reports are available at the level of each individual resource or aggregated to the fileserver level, greatly simplifying the work of the storage administrator in obtaining a granular view of the utilization of each of the fileserver’s components. WysDM’s Predictive Analysis Engine monitors all of the resource utilization information continually to look for current and potential future issues, and alerts when high levels of resource utilization are occurring or predicted to occur at a point in the future.
