Capacity Planning

Backup administrators face a continual struggle to keep their backup environment of high enough specification to protect the entire computing environment. Data growth continues apace, and for backup administrators the feeling of running to stand still is an all-to-common one. Areas such as backup device and CPU utilization need constant attention, and the limited budgets available mean that backup administrators spend a significant amount of time working out which piece of the backup infrastructure needs to be upgraded next. Backup administrators also have to keep an eye on resources that have hard limits, such as number of writable media and number of available client licenses. It is all too common a case that the lack of media, for example, is only found out at the time that it becomes an issue. In these situations the cost of purchase is significantly higher as speed of delivery, rather than price, becomes the main factor.

WysDM for Backups provides full reporting and analysis of current and future capacity in the backup environment. WysDM obtains data on all key resources and provides reports down to the level of per-drive utilization and per-volume capacity. WysDM for Backups also generates higher-level reports such as the number of writable tapes and percentage utilization of each drive. The Predictive Analysis Engine continually monitors existing levels of resources and extrapolates current and historical information to provide estimates of when resources will run out, for example alerting that the backup system will run out of writable media in the next six weeks. Backup administrators can be assured that they will have adequate notification to make the right purchases as the right time, leading to cost savings and increased reliability.
