Asset Management

Backup administrators used to have one or perhaps two backup servers in their storage environment, providing a central location for managing and maintaining backups. With the explosion in data growth, global distribution and trend of business consolidation seen over the past few years this is no longer the case. Large environments may have 20 or more backup servers scattered across a number of physical locations and timezones. Although backup servers can perform just as well in these large environments as in smaller ones the management tools available to understand their use do not scale nearly as well. The result is that a large number of backup servers contain misconfigurations that cause performance problems at best and problems that do not make themselves apparent until a restore is attempted. Even in situations where backup administrators configure servers correctly the dynamic nature of the enterprise environment means that a large number of changes will take place on them over their lifetime and any of these could cause issues solely or in tandem with other aspects of the environment.

WysDM for Backups gathers data and generates comprehensive reports on all aspects of the backup environment's assets. WysDM for Backups reports on low-level details such as operating system revision and tape drive firmware levels as well as high-level metrics such as prevalence of different brands or models of tape drive over all or a subset of the environment. The Predictive Analysis Engine scans the data continually to find issues such as misconfigurations and send alerts when such issues are found.
